In recent years Chefchaouen (also known simply as Chaouen) has shaken off a rather fearsome and isolationist reputation: until 1920 Christians attempting to enter the town were executed, and more recently it has been the centre of the marijuana-growing industry that proliferates in this part of the Rif Mountains. Perhaps because of this trade, and its remote location, hidden beneath high mountain peaks, the town has a bohemian feel, with a pretty medina of painted houses (often a beautiful blue) with tiled roofs.
