Rabat is a wonderful counterpoint to the other major cities of Morocco; where Marrakech and Fez are intense, almost claustrophobic experiences, Rabat is a city of open spaces and wide boulevards, refreshed by sea breezes. The medina and kasbah are atmospheric places, and the city is dominated by the imposing tower of the Hassan Mosque. The Chellah is an ancient city on the edge of Rabat, and was used as a royal burial ground by the Almohad dynasty who ruled Morocco for much of the 12th century. The ruins are remarkably beautiful and very peaceful. The French influence on the city (they made it the capital when they ruled) is seen in the wide boulevards and café culture. Rabat is a great place to spend a bit of time, offering a lovely blend of culture, history and relaxation – a mix you can’t really find anywhere else in the country.
